Emma is haunted by childhood abuse and sickened by repeated failures of the criminal justice system. A DS on a paedophile task force, she was suspended after attacking alleged peadophile, Simon.
When Simon’s trial ‘cracks’ and he is acquitted, she is consumed by the desire to protect the innocent – and a thirst for vengeance. As she spirals into vigilantism, her actions are watched by a horrified Darren, her former police partner - and by The House.
The House, a portal between the Third Heaven and Earth, through which savage Angels peek at hated humanity – a doorway they can reach through, to can grab humanity’s vilest souls for an eternity of torture. Aroused by the stench of Simon’s corruption and the strength of Emma’s passion, The House exerts its pull.
The ancient Maude, incumbent gatekeeper of The House, was once very similar to Emma. She teeters towards her own welcome death, and understands The House must replace her, and welcomes the release of her burden, but when she realises it has its sights on Emma, she tries to warn her off.
The House claims Simon. He joins the ranks of tortured souls.
The House claims Emma. Taunting, luring and provoking - ultimately offering supernatural retribution against the perverted she has battled all her life; she becomes Maude’s apprentice.
But the Gatekeeper of hell should offer a final chance of redemption, a role Emma finds impossible to embrace. Her hatred instead expands; the rapists, serial killers, terrorists… the vilest of humanity, and Emma relishes their fate.
Darren’s respect and friendship turns to despair and then contempt as he suspects Emma’s hand in disappearances, and he focuses on bringing Emma herself to justice. Two friends become bitter enemies, and Emma begins the fight of her life – to retain her humanity in the face of unlimited power.
But under Maude’s gentle guidance, and as Emma gets to know the tragic Pale Man, an early victim of The House, the nature of the terrible, eternal retribution sinks in and she develops an empathy with the most heinous of humanity.
The second book of Enoch: “Third Heaven, a very terrible place with all manner of tortures, in which merciless angels torment those who dishonour God, who on earth practice sin against nature..."
