SERIES SYNOPSIS
Another child death after a short, tragic life of brutality. Alex, the Social Worker; Eloise, Child Protection; Shanaya, Psychiatrist; Malaika, Probation Officer - pulled together after a Minister was lambasted on national television for failings of Social Services. A horrified nation and a Minister lambasted on national television for failings of Social Services. Back against the wall, she gambles on a half-baked suggestion – a cross-discipline unit. She directs her number 2, Johnston, to staff it with non-partisans; experienced enough to succeed, expedient if they fail.
Their first case: abused Traveller children, but abused by whom? They are forced to confront their stereotypes and prejudices as they make the momentous decision- rip a family apart or risk child-murder. Perpetrators uncovered, their diligence keeps a family together, takes Young Offenders off the street – and diverts a media storm.
Perpetrators uncovered, their diligence keeps a family together, takes Young Offenders off the street – and diverts a media storm.
No time for team building, no time for reflection, the next case, again politically sensitive; the death of a child linked to a high-profile Public School hits the media, amid allegations of corruption and privilege. They impress with a thorough investigation and resolution, appeasing the press and general public, and they’re onto the next case...
The unit creates jealousy and resentment in the different administrations they’re seconded from. People are waiting for them to fail, not least Johnston who has very personal reasons for wanting Alex out of the way.
The stakes could not be higher for the girls; Alex faces the sack after one complaint too many. Disciplinary action on-hold, pending the outcome of MACU; Eloise achieved her place in MACU despite her DCI father’s best efforts to undermine her candidature, unable to handle his interference any longer. Malaika is competent and experienced, but old-school and out of date. When she joins MACU, her job is swiftly re-assigned; Shanaya only viewed MACU as a stepping stone, and as her love for the role, and the team, grows, so does pressure for prestige and more money.
Buoyed by each success, saving a child’s life, keeping a family together, or reuniting family members, they dig to discover the truth of what lies Behind Closed Doors.
