Two teen survivalists, their grandmother, a teenage Viking, a middle-aged mother and her robot unite to topple dictators of a scorched earth decimated by ecological disasters.
Report: 2067. Global Fighting over. territorial battles in progress; war lords prevalent; pockets of semi- democracy. stop. Radiation localised. stop. Famine localised. stop. World Wide Web defunct. Stop. Space program proceeding to plan. stop.
War, overpopulation, deforestation, climate change, greed. By the mid-21st C, the planet is in freefall. AI, automation and ‘green’ capabilities could have fixed our problems, but instead, we looked to space. Huge, orbiting stations were built to churn out space probes – and the relief! Habitable planets were found.
Countries have shrunk to states and xenophobic, war torn regions. No travel, the Internet locked down, education now propaganda. The strongest and cleverest are conscripted for the Space Program, while an Elite, super-rich live in space stations to avoid wars, quakes, tsunamis and pestilence, waiting as new planets are tamed.
The year 2067. The new Dark Ages.
England’s old coastline is under water. Poverty stricken, the English (no longer a United Kingdom) look backwards. May Pole dancing and cricket, traditions resurrected and desperately clung to. But for Alice, a professor of music at Oxford, life lost all meaning when her daughter was conscripted for the space program. Then she discovers that her daughter may not be in space, and begins a hunt to find her.
Norway Hard hit by global warming, every resource is hoarded – and fought over; the Vikings are reborn. Honour governs everything, coupled with strength, courage and martial skills. Lena, a teen warrior, awaits execution after her clan massacred children... But Lena’s encrypted brain-chip reveals a 3rd party behind the massacre, and she embarks on a secret quest to discover who is sabotaging peaceful alliances.
Canada is struggling. Bordered by the US when it fell apart, gangsters and gun lords, the detritus of society, emigrated with the refugees, to continue their bloodshed. Canada introduced conscription, to patrol a porous border, but a deadly drug which liquifies the brain, is heading north and they are heavily outnumbered.
Way, way up North, a group of families exist, happily, having escaped the impending crises 50 years earlier. When their supplies run critically low, they are forced to forage South. Su and Finn, twins, and their grandmother Ella make the trip for provisions. Captured by Canadian authorities and enlisted, they realise their commune is under greater threat than low medical supplies, and they join a team heading south of the border to stop the drug.
Different goals, different routes and different priorities – but they all end in one place: Kentucky. Earth’s platform into space. Apparently...
The three groups discover the greatest rip-off in history. No habitable planets and instead regions ‘managed’ to reduce numbers to a level the crippled plant can support. Sensible if not benign intentions, overseen by a wealthy elite. Earth segmented into portfolios with targets for production – and reduction – and the imposition of a feudal system with them as arch-overlords. With no international communications and no money, how will the three groups expose the fraud and depose the elite?
