FAKING IT is a drama set in LA in 1992. The year of the Rodney King riots, when kids took to the streets with gangsta rap and a Fuck You to authority. Skating, ever the outsider sport, embraced the rebellion. The decks, clothing and tricks are changing. The ‘surf vibe’ of grunge and vert (ramps) is rapidly replaced by hip-hop and street-kids skating ‘street’. Many skaters are getting left behind.
FAKING IT follows Steph (24), an entitled secretary who masquerades as a Sports Agent for an ensemble of young Pro Skaters (14-20), and their Team Manager, JP (26), delivering an insider view of skating – the adrenalin highs, competition wins, inventing new tricks, the groupie ‘Bettys’ and adoring fans… and the lows, of damaged and vulnerable youths getting the shit kicked out of them by Jocks, being targeted by police or ‘Karens’, and surviving below the poverty line. FAKING IT is historically accurate, based on Shane O’Brien’s life as a Pro Skater in SoCal and the UK, then later as European Team Manager for NHS (Santa Cruz, Independent etc.). It is inspired by Shane’s experiences, and the characters and legends he met, skated, and worked with – some are still household names, but many of whom are not alive today.
